Accounts Assistant required for one of the largest privately owned business in Hull

An opportunity has arisen within J. R. Rix & Sons, for an Accounts Assistant to join a busy and fast-paced finance team. They a large Hull based group of companies, that comprises several diverse businesses with a which have a combined turnover in excess of £100million.

J.R.Rix & Sons started out as ship owners in the 1870's however it is only a small part of what they do today. With their diverse activities ranging from stevedoring, warehousing, and car retailing through to fuel distribution, manufacturing and property development.

Accounts Assistant

The role will be situated within the finance department at their new Head Office on Hull’s Marina. This has been a huge investment for the Group, moving into state-of-the-art offices in Humber Quays.


You will primarily be responsible for performing daily accounting tasks across a number of companies within the group that will support the team.

  • Maintaining the general ledger accounts. Which will also involve tracking invoices and making payments
  • Ensuring correct allocation of expenditure to cost centres.
  • Control of the company bank accounts and credit cards. This includes ensuring a full reconciliation is undertaken at least weekly and any potential challenges in cash flow are highlighted at the earliest possible.
  • Preparation of accurate weekly and monthly financial reports (i.e. weekly dashboards/ management accounts / variance to budget analysis and appropriate commentary and recommendations)
  • Preparation of Month End Journal such as Accruals / Prepayments.
  • The maintenance of the Fixed Asset registers to ensure all company records are accurate.
  • Assist the Management Accountants with producing accurate and timely monthly management accounts.
  • Contact customers to chase payment of invoices if needed.

To be the successful Accounts Assistant, it would be ideal if you have: 

A relevant accounting qualification such as AAT is preferred, however candidates with adequate practical experience will be considered.

The role requires experience with bookkeeping practices and must have relevant recent experience of purchase ledger, sales ledger and bank reconciliations within a computerised accounting system.


A knowledge of the Great Plains accounting software is also preferable however not essential.

The role requires an IT literate candidate with Excel skills that has; attention to detail, organisation skills, communication skills and the ability to work to their own initiative as required.
